What is the Difference between Refacing and Resurfacing?

Although you will see these terms used interchangeably there is a difference between the two things.

  1. Resurfacing.  This is the process of changing the colour of your current cabinet doors and drawer fronts.  Usually, this means taking the doors and drawers off of your cabinets and getting them painted.  There are a number of different things that can happen, from sanding them down and restaining them, to painting over the current stain.  Most people who choose this route are going from a wood colour stain to white.  White cabinets are very popular and many people who buy older homes simply update the kitchen by painting the cabinets white, adding some new moulding and that is it.
    • The other major part of this is re-laminating your current cabinet doors.  What happens here is the old laminate on your doors is removed with chemicals or sanding and a new laminate is glued on.  This process is more time consuming and usually more expensive.  The upside of this is that your cabinets look completely new, and match other wood types for flooring and furniture.
  2. Refacing.  Refacing your cabinets is the process of completely replacing the current cabinet doors and the drawer fronts.  This means that the current cabinet doors are removed and discarded.  Then you purchase new fronts and install them.  This is a much quicker process and can be done in an afternoon unless major work needs to be done to the cabinet boxes/frames.

Dealing with Gables.

In a kitchen, the gable is the part of the cabinet box that you see.  It is usually on the outside of the fridge compartment and at the end of the cabinet row.  The gables need to be considered when you are doing a refacing or resurfacing.  If you paint the cabinet doors then you will also simply paint the gables.  If you re-laminate the doors, then you will also need to re-laminate the gables or replace them with a matching gable.  If you are refacing your cabinet doors, the kitchen renovation specialist will likely have matching gables for you to use.

How much does it cost to resurface kitchen cabinets in Canada?

In Canada, the cost of refacing kitchen cabinets is typically half of the cost of replacing the entire cabinet.  For a small kitchen in the 120 square foot range, you are looking at 1200-3000 dollars depending on the look and type of wood.

For bigger kitchens, you are looking at a price closer 4-5000$

It also depends greatly on what you are doing.  If you are just painting the doors then the price will be less, if you are sanding them down and restaining then the price will be higher.

Can you remove cabinet refacing?

Yes, just like the original cabinet facing that was removed when you got the re-facing done, you can also then remove the re-facing if you need to down the road.  The process usually involves scraping, chemicals and sanding in order to remove the glued on laminate.

Is it cheaper to refinish or replace cabinets?

It is cheaper to refinish your cabinets.  Replacing all of your cabinets and getting a whole new kitchen can run anywhere from 10-25000 dollars, and that’s just for your typical stuff.  If you want custom cabinets the cost just goes up.  Refacing or resurfacing your cabinets is usually 30-50% less than a full replacement.

Can you just buy new cabinet doors?

Yes! You can definitely just buy new cabinet doors.  There are a couple of issues.  Not all doors are the same size, and sometimes finding the right size for an older kitchen can be quite difficult.  The other issue is matching the hardware locations and making sure you can get a match.

If you need a custom cabinet door set that will increase the cost, but if you have a cabinet system in which you can find new doors for then switching them out can be really easy.
