How Much Does it Cost to Build a Deck in Calgary?
Prices for decks in the City of Calgary vary greatly, as you would expect. There are a large number of different factors that affect the overall cost of building a new deck or upgrading an old deck.
A rough guide to pricing would be from $21.0 to $71.0 per square foot. A standard 12' x 4' deck cost from $3,528 to $11,928. Of course, there are other issues currently like supply and demand issues with supply chains, and the results of inflation on materials and labour.
Another issue that most people don't think about when pricing a deck is the planning and foundation requirements. Creating a solid foundation for your deck to sit on is critical so that it doesn't sink. Each deck and each back or front yard has different requirements and different environmental factors. Part of your deck cost will also be hiring your contractor.
How Much Does it Cost to Replace a Deck in Calgary?
Replacing a deck in Calgary has a similar price range. You should end up saving a little bit of money if your foundation piles are being reused, and are appropriate for the job. Demolition and removal of the old deck is another issue. If the contractor does it that will be an extra charge, if you do it yourself, you may be able to save a little money upfront.
Do you need a Permit to Build a Deck in Calgary?
Yes, you will require a building permit if your deck height is over 0.6m (approximately two feet) above grade at any point. You are building a covered deck such as an enclosed sundeck, a deck with open rafters or a gazebo (this is considered an addition and may require a Development Permit).
How Much Does Composite Decking Cost in Calgary?
When Is a good time to Start the Project in a City like Calgary?
The best time to start your deck in a city like Calgary is after the ground has thawed. The ground usually freezes up to 6-7 feet deep during the winter and that needs to thaw so you can create holes for your piles. Powerful machines can dig through some of that deep frost, but it may cause movement in the spring and summer. The best time for these types of projects is in spring and early summer.
The other option is to wait till last fall when prices might be a little lower, and the winter hasn't set in yet. You will need to wait till the following year to enjoy your new deck fully, but it may work for some who have a schedule that requires that.
Do I need a Permit for my Deck in Calgary?

However as mentioned above depending on the type, size and height of your deck you will need a permit. We can help you with this process and help you make sure that all of the required documents are in place.
Will my new Deck affect my Property Taxes?
The answer to this question is maybe but most likely not. The Property assessment corporation typically assigns a value to a house in a neighbourhood based on value and square footage.
The building and development permit office doesn't share information with the assessment office so just like basement developments they don't add decks to the value calculation. However, a special assessment to your home or disclosure to the assessment office of upgrades can increase your property tax because of the increase in home value.
